Zero Harm Success - on the NSW North Coast Pacific Highway Duplication Projects
Congratulations to the Sales & Logistics teams from Boral Australia on an outstanding zero harm achievement - whilst maintaining cement supply continuity to the Pacific Highway duplication projects on the NSW North Coast.
The achievement of zero harm required an unrelenting focus from all team members. The activity that was managed by Boral personnel and Contractors was particularly challenging and included:
A high number of truck movements – 25 loads per day during peak activity levels;
Up to 90 wagon movements per week – transferring 5,000 tonnes of cement;
A large number of people across the supply chain - about 40 on site at a time;
Substantial mobile on-site storage solutions – up to 7 units in operation, with a total storage capacity of 1,200 tonnes;
Garry Murphy, Acting National General Manager Supply Chain & Logistics for Boral Cement said “the teamwork shown across both CM&C businesses is a testament to the success of these projects to date. We have also received customer feedback that is highly complementary of our planning/execution of logistics service both for deliveries and mobile on site storage solutions.”
The broader project involved the construction of 162 kilometers of roadway. Boral Australia supplied cement and fly ash to a number of sections since July 2014 including:
- The Frederickton to Eungai section – 26.5 kilometres of four-lane divided road, with 50 kt of SL cement and 20 kt of fly ash safely supplied;
- The Nambucca Heads to Uranga section - 22 kilometres of four-lane divided road, with 55 kt of SL cement and 25 kt of fly ash delivered.
To achieve zero harm, significant safety and environmental challenges were identified and worked through as part of a formal risk management process. Planning began over six months before the actual projects commenced.
David Long, Project Director CPB Contractors said:
"Last week saw the successful opening of the Frederickton to Eungai portion of the Pacific Highway. This could not have been achieved without the great teamwork we experienced working with Boral Australia. Both teams worked hard on generating a level of trust early on in the contract, once this was established the daily ordering and communication between the teams was second to none and there can be no better indication of this than the fact that the project never experienced a stock out. This is not to say that the supply chain did not have its challenges… but communication and open honest dealings between the two teams ensured the challenges were met and overcome.
Please extend our thanks to the schedulers, transport co-ordinators and project management involved in making this a successful and enjoyable project."
